Reggio Emilia in the Middle East

Reggio Emilia is often considered the premire early childhood education program....and now it's in the middle east (the UAE to be exact). I'm not sure how successful it will be though. A hallmark of this program is its interdependence with the culture and city of Reggio Emilia, Italy (Brewer, 2007). Read more about it here.

I am intersted as to how the Dubai culture mixed w/ British standards adapts the approach. Any photos?
I am the atelierista at a Reggio inspired public school in Wash DC (schoolwithinschool.org). I believe this approach is a belief system and way of life, that can indeed be adapted anywhere.

Marla,

Thanks so much for your post.

I tried uploading some photos, but either the link was broken or the pictures would not download for me. I can't even find the linke now.

I'm not quite sure that I believe that Reggio can be adapted anywhere. DC is quite different than some of rural towns of "hundreds" I see in South Carolina where all of the stores are cloistered. I do, however, believe that that the principles of Reggio can be implemented in almost any environment.

Assessment through performance and the use of long-term, student-inspired, multidisciplinary projects should be a center of early childhood classrooms anyway.

I am a teacher in Beirut, Lebanon, and we teach the Reggio way. I can say that, although we often come across skepticism (could happen anywhere) from parents and the community, the children have definitely shown what they are capable of. Children everywhere benefit from this philosophy, and it certainly has been the case for us in the Middle East!

I think that because Reggio is not a program, but a philosophy, that it can be applied to any cultural situation.
